AussieMOO's Netiquette Guide

Netiquette is a phrase that is becoming a common sight on the Internet. It is a combination of Etiquette and Net and essentially means exactly that: Etiquette on the Internet. In MOO you will interact with many people from many different backgrounds, with many different cultures, ideals, morals and standards. In such a diverse community it is important to be open minded and respect other people. Therefore you need to be careful of what you say to other people. Something that seems harmless or even funny to you could be damaging and hurtful to someone else. This is especially true for emotes. Many people take their MOO life very seriously. A violent or abusive emote can have the same emotional effect it would if you did it to them in real life. The AussieMOO community respects this view and enforces it. To avoid a breach of Netiquette on MOO, stick to these basic guidelines.

· Be nice to other people: Pretty simple and good to remember. AussieMOO has one of the friendliest MOO communities on the Internet and is proud of it.

· In MOO, other people are real too: Remember that everyone you talk to is a living, breathing human being, just like yourself, with feelings and emotions. Treat them with the respect you'd show in real life.

· If you wouldn't do it in real life, don't do it on MOO: The virtual nature of MOO is not an excuse to act on impulses you'd otherwise repress. You wouldn't walk up to a stranger in real life and headbutt them. Don't do it online.

· Help others if you can: There is always someone who knows something about MOO that you don't. And we all start off knowing very little. Help the people who know less than you, because it's almost certain that there are people who know more than you who are willing to help you.

· Restrict your use of profanity: This is common courtesy. The AussieMOO community in general favours freedom of speech, but again, it is always important to remember how your words could effect someone else.

There are also some other informal MOO courtesies practised on AussieMOO, these are mostly referred to as Manners.

· Knock or page before joining another character.
· Answer a Wizard when they speak to you.
· Inform other players in the room with you before you leave it or disconnect.
· Do not teleport away after being summoned by a Wizard, until they are finished speaking to you.

If you keep this in mind you can make yours and everyone elses MOOing experience much more fun and fulfilling.
